TOMÉ BORGES, COACH & MASTER

We all have idols and references, closer or further away from us, some in person, some symbolic and we have them in several areas but specially in those areas we like best. Throughout the school years we get several teachers and inevitably some we like more than others. In sports, as in any other area, it’s rare to have and to go through just only one Coach or Teacher and inevitably as well, in this area we also HAVE THE ONE COACH that stands out and that can change our life!

What I am today, it is my Coach’s, Tomé Borges, result. And I say this with all due respect for the education that was given to me by my parents, family, friends and teammates.

He was the main person responsible for planting and routing my love for Table Tennis. In addition to being a Coach, he was also Teacher, School President, City Councilman for Torres Vedras, and he could go way further and beyond on his contributions to the community, to his students and to the sport he loved if cancer didn’t caught up with him…

We could always feel his passion in each word he said, like when his gaze was penetrating far and beyond our talent for the game, and still to this day we keep the values he ​​passed along to us in how to face Life…

My memory is not that good, but I remember going on Tournaments trips and staying awake talking with my “Master” during those road rides.

Ohhh, and what conversations we had! Today I realize how important it is to have someone awake while we drive for so many hours, because the risk and the danger of doing it while everyone is sleeping is high, unfortunately.

He got diagnosed with a cancer that was about “to kill him in less than 6 months” but the BIG MASTER didn’t accept it at all and he “fought back and waited” six long and hard years until he could say, that in addition to his magnificent children, he “had given birth” to an Olympic Coach and to a Vice-President of the Portuguese Table Tennis Association.

He never really liked the idea of ​​me being a Coach, even professional Coach, but now, there is no going back and it’s YOUR FAULT TOMÉ!

Is there anything better than doing what we like best?!?!?!

His legacy is HUGE and I feel a huge responsibility to contribute to others, in however little way it may be, just as he contributed to what I am today.

TOMÉ BORGES, TREINADOR & MESTRE

Todos nós temos ídolos e referências, mais perto ou mais longe (internacionais), em várias áreas ou naquelas áreas de que gostamos mais. Na escola temos vários professores, onde há sempre alguns de que gostamos mais que outros. No desporto tal como em outra área qualquer, é raro termos só um Treinador ou Professor, e aí também temos AQUELE que se destaca e que pode mudar a tua Vida!

Aquilo que sou hoje, é “culpa” do meu Treinador Tomé Borges. Com todo o respeito pela educação que me foi dada por todos, desde os meus pais, família, profesuntil he could saysores, amigos e colegas.

Foi ele que me pôs seriamente o “bichinho da bolinha de celulóide” (agora de plástico). Para além de Treinador, foi Professor, Presidente de Escola, Vereador da Câmara Municipal de Torres Vedras, e não fosse um “xico-esperto” aparecer, sabe-se lá onde iria parar…

A sua paixão sentia-se em cada palavra que dizia, o seu olhar era penetrante e muito para além do nosso jeito para jogar, ficam os valores transmitidos para enfrentar a Vida…

Tenho pouca memória, mas lembro-me que ia a grande parte das viagens para Torneios acordado na conversa com o Mestre, e que conversas! Hoje percebo a importância de ter alguém acordado enquanto conduzimos horas a fio, pois o risco e o perigo de o fazer com todos os atletas a dormir é grande, infelizmente.

O “xico-esperto” deu-lhe 6 meses, mas o GRANDE MESTRE não aceitou e esperou 6 anos até puder dizer que, para além dos seus magníficos filhotes, “deu à luz” a um Treinador Olímpico e a um Vice-Presidente da Federação Portuguesa de Ténis de Mesa.

Ele nunca gostou muito da ideia de eu ser Treinador, ainda por cima profissional, mas, para já, não há volta a dar e A CULPA É TUA TOMÉ! Há lá coisa melhor do que fazermos aquilo que mais gostamos!

O seu legado é ENORME e sinto uma enorme responsabilidade em poder contribuir, por pouco que seja, da mesma forma que ele contribuiu para aquilo que sou hoje.
